2024 Session Thoughts

As the legislature has now adjourned for the year, it’s time to take stock of the bills that passed or failed, vetoes sustained or overridden, and especially take a look at the work of our elected leaders. Many of the votes came down to one or two people being the deciding factor in what passed or failed. Some good bills never even had a chance because majority leadership didn’t want them to see the light of day. And some bad bills made it through because a few people near the top decided these issues mattered more.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • Does the work of our legislature reflect the best we can do for the people of Kansas?

  • Does my elected official speak to the issues important to me and my neighbors?

  • Or do they follow the leader and keep the status quo?

It’s true there are many good, well-intentioned people serving us in the legislature. It’s also true that when any group has a supermajority, many of the real issues affecting us will never be addressed appropriately. Housing, property tax, medicaid, healthcare… We are better when a variety of voices are accurately represented, not just when it’s convenient.

That’s true in all aspects of our lives, and especially when choosing those who make policies that affect the lives of our families–our children–our neighbors. Who do you want at the table speaking for you? How can we expect better outcomes if we don’t change the conversations?

As campaign season now begins in earnest, you’ll be seeing and hearing more from candidates who want to represent you. Ask them the tough questions; engage in real conversations; tell them your hopes and concerns.

Expect them to listen.

Elected officials are public servants–make sure you feel heard. Your priorities should guide the work they do at the Statehouse, not those of a few in power. Now is your chance to take a good look at who you want to be your eyes, ears, and voice for the next two years. Make your vote count.

It matters.
